This hunter sets traps to get coyotes, but accidentally got a wolf with this one.
Coyotes are often hunted and trapped because they can be bad for the area. They’re a bit of a nuisance to farmers, ranchers, or anyone with land and animals. Coyotes are even known to kill family pets, not just farm animals.
Foothold traps are now padded and designed for minimal harm. And for elusive species this is often a good way to sample the population. It looks worse than it is.
The wolf is what a trapper would call an “incidental” catch. He releases the incidental wolf catches unharmed though probably a bit sore from the trap.
