Dogs can constantly keep surprising us with their intelligence, just when you think you’ve seen your pup reach its peak, it manages to come up with a new way of making you smile and sometimes even bring us to tears.
They are quite capable of evoking true happiness within us without an effort. One such story comes from residents of Colombia about a delightful dog that comes in every single day to purchase his own treats with money that does, in fact, grow on trees!
Meet Negro – the amiable black labrador who lives on the campus of the Diversified Technical Educational Institute of Monterrey Casanare in Colombia. For the last six years or so he has kept watch over the campus and its students going about their studies, serving as a guardian to the Institute.
In return, the faculty would provide him with all the love and care in the world, giving Negro adequate food, water, a cozy place for him to sleep in. He roams around the grounds freely, doing regular dog things, hangs out with students, gets fascinated with sounds underground and as of recent – takes a daily stroll to the shop.
A Cookie For A Greenback
According to one of the teachers at the school, Angela Garcia Bernal, says that the dog must have observed the students at the shop quite often and picked up a trend of exchanging goods for a slick leaflike currency.
Now, he was no stranger to being fed cookies, sweets and delicious treats but it would never come when he wanted it. Instead, he depended on others to give it to him. He got wind of this and decided to put his fate into his own paws. One day he walked into the campus store with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail.
It didn’t take long for everyone to understand the situation. Negro wanted to control his destiny and feed himself, the leaf was a currency and he wanted a goodie. Prompting a delighted reaction from everyone present, the long term store attendant, Gladys Barreto, could not help but ‘sell’ him a treat. “He comes for cookies every day now,” she says. “He always pays with a leaf. It is his daily purchase.”
The clever dog managed to get his and make himself understood. “When you first see it, you almost want to cry,” said Bernal, a teacher who was present for the first transaction. “He’s very intelligent.”
“That Is Truly Adorable”
Online reactions to the story have seen people’s hearts melt, to say the least. People are lauding dogs for having “honest perception of how they know things work around them” and congratulating Negro on his proverbial new trick.
Some are wondering if the clever pup would be able to adjust to “exchange rate fluctuation,” and he’s even being called “the best salesdog in the world.”
Just like every good salesman, he knows not to push it too far – Negro does not abuse his cuteness and never asks for more than a couple of treats per day!
