If there’s one thing the internet never seems to get tired of, it’s pictures of dogs being pretty. We’ve heard tales of unlikely friendships between ducks and dogs, tortoises and hippos and capybaras and any other animals on Earth.
All these get a fair amount of attention. Now, imagine the Twitterverse’s reaction when a cute French bulldog and monarch butterfly have one such encounter.
The pup in question is Mochi, a French bulldog that was curious enough to investigate an intruder in his backyard, only to find himself being friends with the lone wanderer.

@dog_rates, perhaps the most famous Twitter dog lover on the internet, picked up on the story and helped him reach thousands of hearts.
Meet the adorable Mochi, snuggled extraordinaire
Before his sudden rise to fame, Mochi was a little pup living his humble life.
The most the internet had heard of him was via his Instagram page – @mochi.the.sd.frenchie – where he had a substantial following, but nothing out of the ordinary.
She loved nothing more than living life, the occasional treat, and, of course, snuggling with her favorite humans.
On the fateful day that fame would strike, Mochi was busy minding his own business – running around in the backyard like puppers such as him often do.
Suddenly, he stopped and noticed something that caught his eye – it wasn’t moving, but he’d never seen anything like it before.
Being the sweet pup that he is, the first instinct that came to mind was ‘friend.’ He wasn’t sure what to do, so he ran circles around the creature until he finally got his owner’s attention.
Mochi and the Monarch
If you’ve ever owned a dog before, you’ll no doubt be familiar with their usual thought process: ‘food or friend?’ in that order.
Let’s not get started on cats, which will try and swat everything they see out of sheer annoyance.
Mochi turned out to be the kind of rare pup whose thought process was completely off the rails. Everything that moved was a friend, and this one moved as he’d never seen before.
Mochi lives in California, a place that Monarchs aren’t seen very often, and when they are, they definitely won’t call it home.
They avoid both people and industrial areas, in favor of both quiet and deserted places. This makes the encounter between the two gentle souls even rarer.
A touching moment between kindred spirits
Mochi seemed to be aware of the fact that he was more prominent and the butterfly a gentle thing that he could crush merely by breathing in it.
After chasing the butterfly around for a few minutes, the owner was finally able to capture what might be the sweetest animal picture of the year.
Just as well, the butterfly seemed to understand that Mochi didn’t mean any ill intent. He was just curious rather than malicious – so it didn’t even try to take flight.
She hung around for fifteen minutes, let herself be sniffed, and finally took a flight. According to @dog_rates, maybe Mochi just wanted a beautiful set of wings like the Monarch.
